Join us for the Cub Scout Leader Expo on Oct 17th!
As your Arrow of Light scout prepares to cross over into Scouts BSA, choosing the right troop is an important step.
We strongly encourage families to visit multiple troops, even if you already have one in mind. Seeing different troop styles helps you and your scout find the best long-term fit.
Local troops regularly host Arrow of Light adventure activities designed specifically for visiting Webelos and AOL scouts. These events are a great way to:
experience how different troops operate
meet youth and adult leaders
complete Arrow of Light requirements
see what feels like the right fit
Troops meet on different nights of the week. If your scout has standing commitments such as sports or church activities, choosing a troop whose meeting night works for your family will significantly improve long-term success.
Every troop has a different personality. As you visit, pay attention to both logistics and culture.
Practical fit
Is the location convenient for your family?
Are annual fees clearly explained and reasonable?
Do they offer fundraising opportunities?
Program strength
How often do they camp or hold outdoor activities?
Do they attend summer camp and high-adventure trips?
Are scouts actively advancing?
Is the troop youth-led, with scouts visibly involved in planning?
Troop culture
Do scouts appear to work well together?
Are younger scouts included and supported?
Do adults provide guidance without taking over?
If you are still deciding, consider visiting a regular troop meeting in addition to Arrow of Light events. Troops are usually very happy to host prospective families.
When your decision is firm (ideally by December or January), please notify pack leadership so we can coordinate crossover planning.
